Incredible Panoramics Gone Wrong? (You decide!)

The world of Panoramic images is an interesting and diverse one. On one hand you can capture absolutely amazing landscapes, seascapes, family photos, mini worlds and a huge variety of other stunning photos. On the other hand, you can attempt to capture something of exquisite beauty, but instead make a complete hash of it. However, this process is not an entirely wasted one, and indeed, some pretty stunning (although surreal) images can come out of this method. Printing Panoramic images are our speciality, so we’ve sifted through a fair few of these images, and below we present the finest surreal, panoramic “mistakes” we could find, along with a brief explanation of how they occurred; Note: in some instances, the panoramic image has been cropped, which could make it ideal for one of our standard size canvas prints.

1. The lighting changes mid panorama…

You could easily be mistaken for thinking this was two photos meshed together. But nope. This is one panoramic view, where a sudden lighting change was encountered half way though capture. In our opinion this looks fantastic. To Achieve: Start taking a panorama and change the lighting half way through capture. Unless you have control of the lighting, this is difficult to do!

2. Body parts get mixed up…

If you take a lot of panoramas whilst out and about with your phone, then you've probably encountered this problem. You take a photo, it doesn't go quite to plan - maybe someone moves, you move the camera too slowly, or just jolt it about. But anyway, you can easily find yourself a rouge limb or a distorted face. But in this instance, the photographer has simply created surreal art! The background remains remarkably intact, whilst the person involved has become a little arm faced. To Achieve: Ask your subject to move about whilst capturing your panoramic shot. Possibly flailing their arms about may achieve a suitable effect.

3. The world goes upside down…

Now, to us, this just looks downright scary. Either the world is being closed like a book, or that is one hell of a wave! Either way, the kids playing in the sea don’t seem a tiny bit bothered. To Achieve: Tilt your device whilst taking the panorama

4. Unroll it…

Clearly, this isn’t a mistake (unless it’s extremely well timed). The photographer and his assistant have simply rotated the can as the camera was moving, creating an unwrapping effect, which looks rather special. Plus it saves cutting open a can and cutting your fingers, if that’s your thing. To Achieve: Rotate the object in time as you pan the camera from left to right. Try to only capture the hand in the very last part of the shot.

5. Make it wonky…

Yes, that’s right, you can take vertical panorama’s as well! Although make sure not to stray too far with your camera, or this will be the rather humorous effect. Stone mason anyone? To Achieve: I'm sure we've all done this. Simply jolt the device at an appropriate time during capture.

6. Instill fear…

(Source: reddit.com) Oh my god, there is a headless ghost (and bodiless) in the Colosseum! You’d expect her to be dressed in ancient Roman clothing, but no, she’s surprisingly modern! To Achieve: Again this is simply an act of your subject moving, whilst you are capturing the shot.

7. Elongate…

(Source: twitter.com) This cat, is either the longest cat on the entire planet, or it’s given absolutely no respect to the fact that a panorama was being taken at the time. Next time moggy, stay still! To Achieve: Your subject (i.e. cat) will need to move in the direction your are panning your camera.

8. Oh my word…

(Source: imgur.com) This is wrong, very, very wrong. To Achieve: Get your subject to move frantically quick. If you want them to look like a multi-limbed alien, then advise them to sit in a bath, like this shot.

9. Squash something up…

This chap has been squashed. Really squashed. At least, we hope that’s what has happened. To Achieve: In this instance, the subject has moved his face to the right half way through capture, creating the squashing illusion. You could also alter how quickly you move your camera half way through capture. Try slower or faster, but only for a brief moment (note: this will be tricky with some motion sensing devices)

10. Now you’ve got a photo, you can catch the bus home…

We think it would be impossible to miss this bus. Especially given that is seems to span round the entire globe! To Achieve: Capture an object moving quickly in the direction of your panoramic capture. So there we have it. Even if you create a panoramic “mistake” on your camera or phone, all may not be lost. You may even create a masterpiece that you deem worthy on hanging on your wall for all to see and comment on. If that’s the case, then grab one of our panoramic prints today, and make your masterpiece stand out. You might even become the next Salvador Dali.
