Quick answer: should I choose a canvas or a framed photo print for a panoramic landscape?
Choose a framed panoramic photo print if you prefer a photographic paper surface and a defined border around your landscape. Choose a panoramic canvas print if you want visible canvas texture, depth on the wall and a finish without glazing. Both can suit mountains, coastlines, city skylines and wide family photographs; the choice depends on the detail in your image, the room's lighting and the presentation you like.
Print Panoramics makes both options from your own photos, using professional 12-colour Giclée printing and UK craftsmanship. We check your image before production and supply these framed prints and canvases ready to hang, with free UK delivery.
A framed photo print and a floating framed canvas are different products. A framed photo is printed on paper behind glazing. A floating framed canvas print has a stretched canvas inside an outer frame, with a visible shadow gap and no glazing.
Canvas prints versus framed photo prints: the practical differences
| What matters | Canvas print | Framed photo print |
|---|---|---|
| Print surface | Our panoramic canvases use 400gsm cotton canvas with a visible weave. | Our panoramic framed photos use 240gsm satin-lustre photographic paper. |
| Landscape detail | Texture adds a painterly feel to broad scenery and colour. | The paper surface suits close viewing of fine branches, buildings and distant details. |
| Reflections | No glazing in front of the image. | Glazing can reflect windows or lamps; check placement and the chosen product's glazing details. |
| Border | A stretched edge, or an optional outer floating frame. | A wooden frame; choose a mounted product if you want a white mount around the photo. |
| Shape | Panoramic and ultra panoramic products are available. | Panoramic and ultra panoramic products are available, with separate mounted options. |
| Wall space | Allow for the canvas size and any outer floating frame. | Compare the image area, mount allowance and finished frame dimensions. |

Which finish suits your panoramic landscape?
For fine detail and a defined frame
A framed photo print is a good starting point for a detailed cityscape, woodland scene or landscape you will view closely. Our panoramic photographic paper has a satin-lustre finish, and the wooden frame gives the picture a clear boundary on the wall. Black, white, brown, natural and silver frames are available on our panoramic framed photo products.
Choose the Panoramic Framed Photo Print for a frame without a white mount. If you want space between the image and the frame, choose the Panoramic Framed Mounted Photo Print. Both suit landscapes; a mount is a presentation choice, not a requirement for a framed photo.
For texture and a large wall display
Canvas works well when you want a broad landscape to feel like part of the room: a beach above a sofa, a mountain panorama across a dining wall, or a travel photograph behind a desk. Our panoramic canvases are printed on 400gsm cotton canvas and stretched over kiln-dried pine bars. The weave remains part of the finished look.
Canvas has no glass or acrylic glazing in front of the print. That can make it a useful choice where reflections from a window would be distracting. Check the wall from your usual viewing position at different times of day; avoid placing either finish in prolonged direct sunlight.
For canvas texture with an outer frame
If you like the canvas surface but want a more defined edge, consider a floating framed canvas. It keeps the textured print exposed and adds an outer frame separated from the canvas by a shadow gap. Our standard canvas versus floating framed canvas guide explains the frame options and additional wall space.
Match the print shape to your photo before choosing the size
A wide photo is not automatically an ultra panoramic photo. Start with the proportions of your original image, then compare the print preview. Our panoramic range is based around a 3:1 shape; the ultra panoramic range suits longer, narrower images. Use the dimensions and preview for the particular size you select.
- For a panoramic scene: compare the panoramic canvas and panoramic framed photo.
- For a very wide scene: compare the ultra panoramic canvas and ultra panoramic framed photo. There is also an ultra panoramic framed option with a white mount.
- For a very large wall: check the available extra large canvas sizes and have your image assessed before deciding on an enlargement.
Keep important details away from the crop boundary: a lighthouse at the edge, a mountain peak near the top or people at either end of a group. Check the canvas edge option as well as the front preview. For mounted photo prints, a small part of the image sits beneath the mount; our panoramic mounted products specify a 2–3mm overlap. Contact us before ordering if a subject sits very close to an edge.
Compare image size with finished wall size
A mount changes how much of the overall display is occupied by the photograph. For example, our Panoramic Framed Mounted Photo Print lists a 34 × 14 inch frame-size option with a 30 × 10 inch image. The white mount accounts for the difference. Use the product's image-size table rather than assuming the selected size is all photograph.
For an accurate comparison, decide how wide you want the image itself to appear, then allow for any mount and outer frame. Mark the intended overall footprint on your wall with removable tape, step back to your normal viewing position and check the space around furniture. If it must fit a recess or a tight gap, ask us to confirm the exact finished dimensions before ordering.
Prepare your landscape photo in three steps
- Find the original file. Use the full-size photo from your camera, phone or cloud library. Screenshots and copies sent through messaging apps may contain less detail.
- Check the usable image size. Enter its pixel dimensions into our image size guide and calculator. The result is a starting point; focus, compression, cropping and viewing distance also affect a suitable print size. A DPI label alone does not tell you whether the photograph will print well.
- Choose the product and review the crop. Upload your image and check the preview for the selected size and finish. Our uploading guide explains the process. If the upload or crop is unclear, contact us with the original file and intended size.
Print Panoramics checks every ordered image before production. If we think it is unsuitable for your chosen enlargement, we will contact you to discuss the options. Avoid repeatedly enlarging or sharpening the file just to reach a numerical target; let us assess the original.
Common mistakes when comparing the two finishes
- Assuming a frame includes a white mount. Check whether you have selected the framed or framed-mounted product.
- Comparing different image areas. A mounted print and a canvas with similar size labels may show the photograph at different sizes.
- Forcing a panorama into the wrong shape. Review the crop before increasing the size; stretching the image changes its proportions.
- Adding a generic border or bleed. Follow the chosen product's instructions and preview. Ask for help with an important detail near the edge.
- Choosing solely from a starting price. Compare your selected size, finish and frame. Use the current product options for the total; free UK delivery is included.
Hanging and looking after your print
These canvases and framed photo prints arrive ready to hang. Use wall fixings suitable for the actual artwork weight and your wall construction, following the supplied hanging guidance. For a large piece or a public space, get help choosing appropriate fixings if you are unsure.
Handle your print by its frame or edges, keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions, and follow its care instructions. Avoid applying household cleaners, extra varnish or DIY coatings to the print surface. Contact us if it needs more than gentle dusting.
Frequently asked questions
Is a framed photo print better than canvas for a landscape?
Neither finish is best for every landscape. Choose photographic paper and a frame for a defined presentation and close viewing of detail. Choose canvas for texture, wall depth and an image without glazing. The original photograph and your room's lighting matter as much as the finish.
Can I print a phone panorama on either finish?
Yes, if the original image is suitable for the size you choose. Compare panoramic and ultra panoramic previews, then use our image-size calculator or ask us to check the file. The device name alone does not determine print quality.
Do all framed photo prints come with a mount?
No. Print Panoramics offers panoramic framed photos without a white mount and separate framed-mounted products with a white mount. Check the product name and image-size table before ordering.
Is a framed canvas the same as a framed photo?
No. A floating framed canvas is a print on stretched canvas with an outer frame and shadow gap. A framed photo is printed on photographic paper and displayed behind glazing, with or without a mount depending on the product.
